Anniversary Update
It’s been a year since A Summer’s End was released. We are immensely touched by all the support and feedback we have received. We appreciate everyone who has commented and wrote to us personally. It means so much to hear that we were able to connect to many of you and that the game was able to provide an uplifting and positive experience.
We have some exciting news to announce. First of all, we will be releasing a game update that’s been in the works for some time now. A Chinese translation will be made available in the upcoming months. This translation was made possible by the efforts of several collaborating teams and we appreciate their assistance. A Cantonese, a Traditional Chinese, and a Simplified Chinese version of the text can be selected through the settings menu in the upcoming game update.
A Summer’s End is story created in reflection of many things. It is both an homage to the past and an allegory for the present. It is also a means for us to seek representation in a platform that rarely depicts an authentic Asian LGBTQ experience.
Although we are based in Canada, our studio members trace their family roots from Southern China, Hong Kong, and Thailand. Since A Summer’s End was released, we watched with heavy hearts how the political landscape in many parts of the world take a slide towards autocracy over the past year. This passing year has been a year where deep rooted inequality have been made all too apparent across the world. Anti-Asian rhetoric and hate crimes is on the rise in North America. Structural racism and state violence continue to disproportionately impact the lives of Black and Indigenous people of colour. A year on, we stand by our creative statement and the message behind our game. We firmly believe in a governance that listens to the voices of its people and we express solidarity to those who despite great difficulty seek to enact change for the better. As the political situation becomes more dire, it becomes even more important for us who can freely express themselves to keep creating stories and art.
A Summer’s End means more to us than a love story between two women. Although we created this game with a heartwarming and positive message in mind, it was also a story created with a sense of urgency. When we launched this game in April of 2020, we never could have imagined how things would change in a span of one year. What message we wished to express through our game is not just what have written in our creative statement. The entire story of A Summer’s End is a firm statement of our beliefs and desires. Although Michelle and Sam’s story is fictional, it is story that reflects not only the realities of Hong Kong people, but also that of LGBTQ people and other marginalized people elsewhere.
We want to continue creating stories and we’re pleased to announce that a new project is in development. Our new story will take place in the 1960s and will explore the relationship between two actresses in a society emerging from great social change. As independent creatives, it will be a great endeavour for us and we appreciate your patience and support.
The above image is a preview to our next story. We hope you look forward to it!
We are thankful for everyone’s continued encouragement and we are sincerely grateful for your understanding. Thank you for being here with us.
